I think it was 13 but it could have been 14 straight summers we spent at the baseball fields. That is what happens when you have two sons and a stepson who played the game of baseball. You learn to live by the practice and game schedules, you learn to make no vacation plans as you never know how far the tournament trail will be that summer, and you learn that red dirt will come out of white baseball pants with hair spray and Dawn dish soap.
What you don’t learn or don’t realize at the time is what great memories you are sharing with your kids, what wonderful lifelong friendships your boys are making, as well as the friendships you yourself are making and when you are dragging yourself to the fields when its hot and you just “don’t want to go there again this week”, you don’t know how much you will miss those times when they are gone.
Our boys finished their baseball careers a few years ago (from Tball to college that game took them) and John is still very active with the youth baseball but on a Regional and National level so it is still an aspect of our lives. (We are actually going on vacation this summer just like old times, out of state to a baseball tournament. John has been assigned to work it and I am tagging along (it’s in Florida, my favorite place
and a free hotel for a week makes it even better).
Anyway, before that trip can happen John has state and regional tournaments to oversee here in Virginia. The other night I decided to ride with him over to a 10 year old tournament game. The first youth game I had seen in years. It was so fun to watch the little guys play, watching the parents excitement (and stress level) go up and down with every pitch and every swing of the bat. The memories came flooding back, made me wish I could go back, just for a weekend.

This scene I saw in every dugout my boys ever played in. I could only smile when I saw it again this weekend.

Here is hoping you make some memories this week, or at least have the chance to go back in time for a for a little while and it makes you smile. Take care!
